Friday Book Round-Up - What's on Your Bookshelf?

It's Friday!  It has been a pretty busy week so I didn't finish as many books as I normally would.  Ellie has a sleep study tonight so it should be interesting sleeping on the oh-so-comfortable hospital pull- out chair.  So . . . I'll be reading until I am so tired I can't keep my eyes open.

Sleep study: taken 3 years ago for obstructive and central sleep apnea.

This week I read a romantic comedy, a rockstar enemies -to second chance- to lovers book, a dark romance, and a NA college romance.

4 stars. First up, I am a big fan of Amo Jones.  She likes to write dark romances with anti-heroes such as her series The Elite King's Club (The Black Swan) as well as The Devil's Own MC series and Sinful Souls MC series.  A few weeks ago, I read her rockstar book Losing Traction (Westbeach #1).  It is the story of Ryder and Phoebe.  Phoebe is the sister of a Sinful Souls MC member, but you do not need to read her MC series.  This week, I read F*cker (Westbeach #2) which is about playboy Ryker and Bryleigh.  F*cker can in theory be read as a standalone, but there is character overlap.  This is a difficult book to categorize - it's a rock star romance, but it is a combination of a second chance romance and an enemies-to-lovers romance.  I really enjoyed the book and I am hoping that Amo Jones will continue with the series hopefully with books featuring the other two band members - however it has been a few years since this was written so maybe, maybe not?

Synopsis:

Ryker Oakley only cared about three things during school —fighting, his band, and getting laid. When he took it upon himself to ‘babysit’ Bryleigh Munroe, he didn’t expect her to be so much trouble, and he sure as shit wasn’t prepared for how fast she would grow on him. Fast-forward to eight years later, his band—Twisted Transistor—is the most successful rock group known to mankind. When his brother’s wedding brings the only girl he ever came close to caring about back into his life, he discovers something he thought they had left behind in the past, had been destroying her daily.
Bryleigh Munroe was a popular girl at school, but because her father was a politically powerful man in the San Diego region, the boys either swore away from her or were trying too hard to get with her. She wanted one night. Quick and dirty. No strings. Only she didn’t expect Ryker Oakley to flip the script on her without her even realizing. Eight years later, Bryleigh still battles with the mistakes she made when she was younger. She’s had to deal with things that she shouldn’t have had to, all on her own.
After all this time has their bond remained silent? Can she forgive the torment Ryker inflicted on her? Or will the choices they made all those years ago force them to re-unite.

This is book two in the Westbeach series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

5 stars. I had the great pleasure of receiving an ARC of His Treat by Penelope Bloom.  It is AVAILABLE NOW!  Penelope Bloom writes the most entertaining novels with unique and funny characters.  I have read her previous books in this series, His Banana and  His Cherry and about died laughing.  His Treat is no different, I was holding my stomach and nearly snorting coffee out of my nose.

Synopsis:

Having a hot boss isn’t complicated or confusing at all,
Said no one ever…
But all I have to do is resist for a few months.
Come January, I’m flying to Paris to chase my dream of being an artist,
Too bad I can’t have my treat and eat it, too.

I forgot to mention… My hot boss was also my high school crush.
Sort of.
First, I wanted to crush him with gooey affection.
In the end, I just plain wanted to crush him.
Now he’s back, and he might as well have “do not touch” printed on his chest.
One tiny question: would it count if I didn’t use my hands?

Let me answer my own question. Yes, Emily, you raging horndog, it counts.Besides, my dream is practically waiting for me like a perfectly wrapped, shiny little package if I can just behave. I’d be an absolute idiot to risk that, and I have a long, proud history of not being an idiot to protect.

Unless it’s kind of like when you do really well in class all semester so you can afford to flunk a test at the end. Three months is a long time, and if he’s the one giving me the big, fat, dirty “F”, it does add a little dose of temptation to the equation.

But all I have to do is one quick job for him. A few posters and a few props for a big Halloween party that he’s hosting.

Then I just walk away from his dreamboat eyes and perfect body, grab a plane, and forget about all the beautiful children we could’ve squeezed inside our white picket fence.

4.5 stars. I love a good dark romance and I happened to stumble upon an ARC sign-up for a novel by S.M. Soto in the Give Me Books group.  I read the synopsis and the handful of reviews that were left on Goodreads and decided that I really wanted to participate in the release blitz.  Deception and Chaos was an amazing book.  I waffled between 4 and 5 stars and therefore settled on 4.5 stars because the book does end in a cliffhanger.  I am not a big fan of cliffhangers and I don't like to read the books until all of the series is out, BUT I really really really wanted to read Deception and Chaos.  I am glad that I did because this book sucked me right in.  The characters were unique and the storyline was good.  Plus,  that cliffhanger was a doozy.  The second book in the series is scheduled to release in January 2019 so that wait won't be too long.  *Warning: S.M. Soto is very descriptive in the first few chapters when Sophia is help captive.  This may be a trigger for abuse victims.*

Release Date: November 1, 2018

Synopsis:

Sophia Cova lived a quiet, normal life, shadowed in sadness after the loss of her parents in a tragic airline accident. With her older brother being her only living relative and her anchor, Sophia is sure she’s destined for a brighter future. But that was until she was taken.

Stolen from her mundane, orderly life, she was drugged, and woke to every woman’s worst nightmare.

With only four grimy basement walls and a rancid mattress, she loses her sense of time, and preserves what’s left of her dignity by hurtling herself into the safety of her mind. The men, the beatings, they come and go with no reaction, until she hears one word that sends an arctic chill through her body. Sold.

On the eve of Sophia’s bidding, at one of the largest sexual slavery rings in the world, all hell breaks loose in the mansion of horrors. Gunfire and screams erupt all around her, as panic rises.

Snatched by one monster only to be taken by another, Sophia slowly starts to learn that not everything is as it seems. When secrets unravel, and the twisted game of cat and mouse ensues, The Puppeteer pulls his favorite strings and chaos brews.

Lives are lost while the clock ticks, and only time will tell who will be killed next…

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious content, strong language, and graphic violence. May contain triggers for abuse victims.

4 stars.    This seems to be the week for trying out new authors.  I had the privilege of snagging an ARC of Rebecca Jenshak's upcoming college romance, The Assist. It is a fast, cute read.  Going into it, I figured it would be rather predictable and for the most part, it was, but I really enjoyed this book.    There was humor, romance, and a bit of drama.  The hero, heroine, and secondary characters were well-developed and likable. NA novels are hit or miss for me.  They are either boring and too juvenile or really entertaining.  I am pleased the The Assist was entertaining.

Release Date: November 5, 2018

Synopsis:

A new college sports romance series where the jocks are as smart as they are hot. Coming Fall 2018.
You know those stories where the smart girl tutors the dumb jock? This isn’t it.

Blair
What’s the probability of insulting the one guy on campus I need to help me pass statistics? If I knew, I wouldn’t be standing in front of Wes Reynolds begging him to tutor me.

Basketball player, sexy, arrogant, always sleeping through class… these are the things I knew about him. What I didn’t know is that he is a seriously smart jock.

Wes
What’s the best way to get rid of the peppy and unrelenting girl that keeps asking me to tutor her? If I knew, I wouldn’t be staring at her tan legs and attempting to teach her statistics.

Sorority girl, fine as f**k, determined, ball buster… these are the things I knew about her. What I didn’t know is that she is all the things I didn’t realize I wanted or needed.

Or that one semester with her would change everything.
