Friday Book Round-Up

Happy Friday and Happy New Year!  May 2019 bring you lots of happiness.  It is time for the weekly book round-up.  This week I read 2 dark romances, a romantic suspense with lots of humor, college romance, and of course, a rockstar romance.  Three of these books are new authors for me and I will definitely check out more of their books.  Be sure to check out my Anna's Bookshelf Facebook Page as you can write in the comments what you've been reading!

First up - the two dark romances!

4.5 stars The other day I read an ARC of Micaden's Madness (see the next book below).  I enjoyed it so much that I immediately downloaded Lachlan's Protege. The is a very dark romance involved a sociopath and a sheltered young woman.  The quest for vengeance is strong and Valencia is a pawn.  The story is interesting with a unique storyline, intriguing characters - both main and secondary, and some steamy scenes. While this book takes place after Sociopath's duet, it is a standalone. *Trigger warning: this book has graphic violence, torture and discusses child sexual assault.

She never knew nightmares.
Until she became mine.

She was a ballerina.
He was a serial killer.

She ran away from him.
He caught her.

She begged for mercy.
He gave her none.

She was an angel.
He was a monster.

She wanted to escape.
He wanted to destroy her.

They were at war.
And only one of them would win.

Warning: Dark Romance.
18+ due to sexual content, profanity, abuse, graphic violence, and adult subject matter.

4.5 stars Micaden's Madness floored me with how dark and twisted this book was.   This was my first book by V.F. Mason and I immediately dived into her other books afterwards.  The characters were interesting. How is a sweet young man can be converted to a murderer with a thirst for revenge? My heart broke multiple times for both Micaden and for Emerald.  This is a story of betrayal, vengeance, intense love, and manipulation.

Next Up: Romantic Suspense

5 stars I have no idea how J.T. Geissinger does this, but she has quite the knack for writing a romantic suspense that also has a ton of humor.  This book is a standalone and it is the story of Nasir (aka Barney from the Bad Habit series).  I am always a sucker for a protective alpha bad boy and Nasir is just that.  Eva is a strong heroine who is resilient.  This book is full of action, suspense, and lots of humor.

A strapping bodyguard and a mysterious beauty on the run cross paths and tempt danger in Cozumel…

For Nasir, former Special Ops military man and bodyguard, his new job seems like an easy-money gig: trail a Russian mobster’s runaway wife in Mexico, enjoy the sun, observe, and report. Just one rule: don’t get too close. But it’s all Naz can do not to watch the alluring dancer’s every move. A closer look is irresistible—especially when she’s in trouble.

Evalina escaped to the island getaway to live an untraceable life—as far away from the past as she can get. But Eva can’t ignore the dark, muscled stud who rescues her from a drug gang. He says he’s an ex-cop on vacation. When providence throws them together time and again, Eva thinks it’s all a beautiful coincidence. Now she’s giving in to a strange new sensation: trust.

But Naz has a mission to accomplish and a secret to keep. Eva has her share of secrets, too. And as the heat flares between them, Naz knows that trust could become the most dangerous impulse of all

Coming in March 2019

Next: College Romance
This book covers some deep topics.

5 stars Oh where to begin.  This was a book that when it ended, I wanted to go back and re-read it.  This college romance is not a light-hearted fluffy romance.  It is full of heartbreak and hope; angst and sweetness; humor and dark topics.  I went through a wide array of emotions with this book.  This book touches upon attempted rape and the mention of another student actually being raped (there are no graphic details) on a college campus. Tammara Webber is a new author for me and I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

Rescued by a stranger.
Haunted by a secret
Sometimes, love isn't easy...

He watched her, but never knew her. Until thanks to a chance encounter, he became her savior...

The attraction between them was undeniable. Yet the past he'd worked so hard to overcome, and the future she'd put so much faith in, threatened to tear them apart.

Only together could they fight the pain and guilt, face the truth - and find the unexpected power of  love.

A groundbreaking novel in the New Adult genre, Easy faces one girl's struggle to regain the trust she's lost, find the inner strength to fight back against an attacker, and accept the peace she finds in the arms of a secretive boy.

Finally, the requisite rockstar romance

4 stars If you have been following me a while, then you know that practically every week or so I read a rockstar romance.  Tainted Bastard is book 4 in the Tainted Knight series.  It can be read as standalone, but there is some story and character overlap.  While this isn't my favorite book by this author, I did enjoy it.  We are finally getting Sin's story and I have been curious about him since the series beginning.  I've also been waiting to learn more about the Blonde Bombshells and Ro.  Both characters have been greatly shaped by their rough childhoods and under all the hurt and feeling alone, they are able to to find solace with each other. Of course, they have to survive all the trials and tribulations of living in a rock star world.

“Tell me something true?”

Her sweet voice was like a siren calling me to her.

My truth?

I was a bastard.
I hated everyone.

My past was as dark as my soul.

And she was the only light in that cold darkness.
