Infatuation is a dangerous thing.

It devours you. Manipulates you. Owns you.

You can try to ignore it, try to move past it. But it’s more powerful than you. It won’t let go.

The day I first saw him, infatuation dug its claws into my soul. I couldn’t stop it. Everything faded. Except him.

My infatuation blinded me. Made me see what it wanted me to see. Now I’m lost within the lie. Caged by the beast.

In the end, he will have me.

Until then…I fight.

A tear slipped down my cheek. It was amazing how he could trigger these emotions in me merely by being close. He didn’t have to say a word. He didn’t have to touch me. He simply had to stand there and breathe.

I wiped at my cheek with the back of my hand. “Granite, please leave.” My voice was louder this time, sorrow slowly building my strength.

Nothing. Not a word.

I clutched my stomach tighter, heartache spreading everywhere, filling every crack, threatening to shatter me into a million pieces. I didn’t want to break in front of him. Not again. But I couldn’t stop it. This man managed to engrave himself on my soul, penetrating every part of my being, consuming me to a point where breaking was the only way to get a little relief from constantly trying to fight it.
 To fight him.

“Please,” I whispered as a tear rolled over my lips and I could taste my own sadness. “It hurts too much to be close to you.”

Pain built its way through every bone in my body until it finally erupted. I shot up.
“Please leave!” My voice slammed against the walls, anger echoing from my words. I turned around, ready to lash at him, only to find he wasn’t there. He was gone.

Defiant is the second book in the American Street King series and be sure to read Depraved first as Alyx’s and Granite’s story continues.  This romantic MC suspense is fast paced and full of action.  It picks up right were Depraved left off and we learn more about the inner-workings of the MC crew as well as see how their relationship is affected by the aftermath of what happened in book 1.  Just know, things are not always as they seem.

Told from a dual POV, we get to witness the guilt that both Granite and Alyx face.  Granite remains a strong, likable hero. He has to grapple with the consequences of what happened at the end of Depraved and he has to make tough decisions. The poor guy has so much resting on his shoulders! His obsession with Alyx continues and he has quite the protective streak.  The author does a great job illustrating all the emotions that he experiences all while trying to hold together his MC crew and handle his feelings towards Alyx.

I had a bit more trouble with Alyx (hence the 3.75 stars instead of a solid 4). She is definitely resilient, which is what I liked about her.  By the end of book 1, I thought she became a stronger heroine, yet for the first part of this book she seemed a bit weak - spending the first quarter of the book wallowing in self pity and guilt.  That being said, she really evolved as a character - becoming stronger and braver while learning to be free as she is no longer under her mother’s control.

This book has a couple of tough scenes as the author does an amazing job describing certain things in detail and there are a few twists and turns, which kept the book interesting.  I really enjoyed reading about the other members of the MC crew and Slither is the ultimate villain - I always love a good villain.  This is the conclusion to Alyx’s and Granite’s story, but the author sets the scene for more books - as the American Street Kings woes are not over.  I am really hoping each member of the crew get their own books - especially Ink and Onyx!  I received an early complimentary version of this book.
